The Power of Open-Ended Questions in IT Enterprise Architect Consulting Job

In my professional journey, especially within IT consulting, I consider the period from 2011 to 2020 a golden era where I focused extensively on pre-sales architecture consulting.

During the latter part of the above phase, primarily serving as an Enterprise Architect and Chief Architect for IT consulting companies, I gained extensive experience creating enterprise data and cloud strategies, modernizing legacy systems, adopting technology roadmaps, RFP (request for proposals) and RFI (request for information and leading technology transformations – all valued multi-year, multi-million dollars IT consulting business.

Throughout this process, I conducted numerous interviews with CIOs, CTOs, Senior Vice Presidents, IT Directors, Cloud Architects, Data Architects, Application Developers, Product Managers, Product Owners, and other key stakeholders.

The main objective of these interviews was to thoroughly understand the client’s business, which is essential for accurately assessing the current state before developing a target state.

When conducting these interviews, I found that open-ended questions were particularly effective. While some client employees responded enthusiastically to these questions, others challenged me by asking such questions and assumed I should know their business almost 100%. Despite this, I consistently found that open-ended questions allowed me to capture more comprehensive and valuable information from clients.

Defining Open-Ended Questions:

Open-ended questions are those that cannot be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.” Instead, they require more detailed and elaborate responses, encouraging the respondent to share their thoughts, experiences, and insights.

These questions often begin with words like “what,” “how,” “why,” or “describe,” and they allow for a deeper exploration of the topic at hand.
